From: Matthew Anderson, Pastor and founder (1880) of Berean Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA, in his publication Presbyterianism: Its Relation to the Negro (1897), pp. 79-80. :

“Now if the argument is true which is advanced by some, and we are happy to say that the number who use it is growing gradually less, viz., that the colored people are not adapted to the Presbyterian Church, then we claim that the Presbyterian Church is not adapted to the colored people, and if the Presbyterian church is not adapted to the colored people, it is not entitled to the fellowship, and the support of Christian people. The church which is not adapted to all people—be they white or black, be they Hindoos [sic] or Pagan has not in it the inherent principles of the church of Jesus Christ, hence it is not Christian.

But we believe nothing of the kind in regard to the Presbyterian Church, we believe that this Church is of Christ's planting. It is not the Presbyterian Church that is wrong, but the many false teachers and prophets who are in it. But these were also in the church at the time of Christ, and he pronounced upon them his bitterest maledictions.

The fact is that the belief in the want [lack] of adaptability to the Presbyterian Church on the part of the colored people, has become so fixed in the minds of many good people who never have been led to see the fallacy of the argument, that it influences not only all their actions towards the work of the Presbyterian Church among the colored people, but also the minds of the colored people themselves, towards the Presbyterian Church.”

Gospel Fest Celebration Feb. 22

Come together with New City Fellowship, New City East Lake, Thorns2Crowns Ministries, East Lake Expression Engine, and First Presbyterian to celebrate Christ our King and honor Black History Month through songs and spirituals! Gospel Fest is a musical celebration of God's character through black gospel. We will sing congregational songs and hear choral performances. The event typically includes a homily from a local pastor (the last two years we heard from Pastors Alfred Johnson of Church of the Firstborn and Eddie Jacks of Resurrected Baptist Church). Childcare is not provided. Gospel Fest will take place Sunday, February 22nd at 4:00 pm in the First Presbyterian Church sanctuary.

Tee It Up!
