Experience an evening honoring the rich legacy and enduring power of black spirituals. Dr. Michael Williams, UTC's Director of Africana studies, will lead a compelling talk on the cultural historical and spiritual significance of these songs and their role in shaping African-American identity. Following his presentation, local vocalists will bring these timeless works to life through live performances that uplift, inspire, and remind us of the resilience woven into this musical tradition. The event is free, but registration is required.
Wednesday, February 25 - 7 pm
Covenant College, Brock 118
Dr. Jay Green will help us explore who belongs in the Kingdom of God, taking a deeper dive into issues of immigration and nationalist attitudes. No registration is required.
Thursday, February 26 - 6 pm
Bessie Smith Cultural Center
Join us for a powerful evening of remembrance and reflection, as we shine a light on a difficult chapter in our city's history. The event will begin with the unveiling of a new historical marker on the Bessie Smith Cultural Center lawn, honoring the lives affected by lynching in Chattanooga and affirming our commitment to truth and remembrance. Following the ceremony, guests will gather for a reception and a fireside chat with local historians who will discuss the documented lynchings, their impact on our community, and the ongoing work to preserve the stories. The event is free, but registration is required.
