Rest & Renewal
Supporting Our Ministry Leaders
Why do churches offer their pastors and ministry leaders a sabbatical?
Our denomination has encouraged churches to provide pastors with at least a three-month sabbatical every seven years. New City also encourages our ministry staff to take some time away every seven years or so for the purpose of rest and renewal. Pastor Billy is scheduled to take a sabbatical over the summer months of June, July, and August 2026. Prakash and Pat are also due for some time of rest and renewal this year.
Why is this important? Our PCA Geneva Benefits agency makes the case that
"God created us to work and rest, and hardwired rhythms of both into his creation and codified them in his law. Rest is good, and when we fail to rest, our work suffers, as do our relationships with God, self, and others. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the job, it is difficult for pastors and ministry leaders to unplug from their work and rest. For many, rest feels selfish, like choosing your own needs over the needs of others. But when ministers fail to care for themselves, they eventually find themselves unable to care for others.
Sabbaticals offer ministry leaders and their families invaluable seasons of rest by offering time away from the duties and pressures of ministry. During this time, they can focus on themselves, their families, and their relationship with God. Once completed, they can return to their congregation refreshed and renewed for the next season of ministry."
Please pray for Pastor Billy and Sherry McKillop as they prepare to be away. Pray for good rest and for the Lord’s help in accomplishing some personal, professional, relational and spiritual goals during this time. Pray also for Prakash Wright who will take some time away this summer and for Pat Rolleston who is planning for some time away later in the fall. Pray for our church leaders and staff as others step in to fill the gaps.
